Fabulous homemade ice cream. It's pricey ($4 for a single scoop), but the portion sizes are huge (that "single scoop" was easily a triple scoop). The place is jumping and always crowded with a line out the door. The ice cream is to die for though.

Le Cheval

very disappointed in the downward spiral Le Cheval has taken. This was once one of our favorite places in Oakland, so sad to see it go downhill....bad food, poor service, dirty floors, yet still the lines are long...no reason for us to return, clearly they do not need our custom.

yes, certainly the bakery is a classic, but the restaurant leaves much to be desired. Terribly overpriced for the quality--canned veggies are de rigur. And the service is slow, surly, indifferent, typical of family-style coffee shops everywhere, so this is not too surprising. I guess I just expect more considering the dear prices they charge for such mediocre food. Only saving grace is late night opening hours, when there isn't much else to choose from.
